Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Boerboel and Presa Canario right for me?

Both the Boerboel and Presa Canario are large, powerful guardian breeds. They thrive in homes with experienced owners who can provide structure, training, and consistent leadership. These dogs are loyal, affectionate with their families, and naturally protective — but they are not a first-time owner breed.

If you enjoy training, can offer daily exercise, mental stimulation, and clear boundaries, you’ll be rewarded with a steady, devoted companion. If you’re looking for an “easy” or low-maintenance dog, these breeds may not be the right fit. We are always happy to discuss your lifestyle and help you decide if a Boerboel or Presa Canario is the right match.

What’s the temperament of an Boerboel and Presa Canario?

Both breeds are confident, intelligent, and naturally protective. The Boerboel is known for its steady, loyal nature — often affectionate with family and calm when well-trained and exercised. The Presa Canario is typically more reserved with strangers, with a calm but watchful presence and strong bond to its handler.

Neither breed should be nervous or unpredictable. When bred and raised responsibly, they are stable, reliable guardians that need structured training, clear boundaries, and an experienced owner to thrive.

Are Boerboel and Presa Canarios good with families and other pets?

Both breeds can make excellent family dogs when raised with structure, leadership, and early socialisation. A well-bred Boerboel is typically affectionate, gentle, and protective with children, while the Presa Canario is often more reserved but deeply bonded to its household.

With other pets, success depends on careful introductions, training, and supervision. Both breeds have strong guardian instincts and can be dominant, so they are best suited to experienced owners who can provide clear boundaries and consistent management.

How much exercise do they need?

Boerboels and Presa Canarios are large working breeds that need regular, structured exercise to stay healthy and balanced. Daily walks, purposeful training, and mental stimulation are more important than endless free running. Most adults do well with around 60–90 minutes per day, split between walks, training sessions, and play.

Because they are heavy, growing puppies should avoid over-exercise and high-impact activities until their joints mature. A good balance of age-appropriate exercise, mental enrichment, and clear structure will keep them calm, happy, and well-behaved.

What are common health issues in Boerboel and Presa Canarios?

Like all large breeds, Boerboels and Presa Canarios can be prone to certain health conditions if not carefully bred and managed. The most common issues include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), and some heart conditions. Boerboels may also face eyelid issues such as entropion, while Presa Canarios can be predisposed to cruciate ligament injuries.

Responsible breeders reduce these risks through health testing (hips, elbows, heart, DNA panels), thoughtful pairings, and careful puppy-raising practices. While no dog is completely free from risk, choosing a breeder who is open about health results and testing gives your puppy the best possible start.
